The Berger Bungalow: My Thoughts On How We Are Reacting To The Syrian Refugee News

My Thoughts On How We Are Reacting To The Syrian Refugee News
Posted on:11.17.2015

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming to know exactly what is going on. I'm not even claiming to know much at all about what's going on. I don't have the inside scoop, and I don't have an educational background that would help me know more than anyone else - I am just the average person watching the news, reading articles & trying to learn as much as possible on the matter.
With all of that being said, I completely expect hate comments no matter what I say here. I could probably just write a title using the words “Syrian Refugees” and get 100 hate comments, even if I did not write anything more about this topic.

I was planning on writing my actual thoughts and beliefs today, but what will that do? It won’t convince anyone that we should or should not allow the Refugees to come to America, all it will do is cause more frustration with those that do not agree. Instead, I want to focus on something that can be changed by us - our mindset.

As we hear more and more that the United States should be worried about ISIS coming here and attacking us, people are getting scared. I don’t blame you for being scared - this is something that a big chunk of our population has never dealt with before. It’s hard to know how to react to a situation that you’ve never been in before, especially when you see thousands of others on social media publishing hate comments and fighting with those around them. Our population is scared and it seems like most are dealing with it by getting angry with each other.

What does this accomplish?!

This accomplishes absolutely nothing. During hard times, we need to support each other. We’re supposed to be a team, but instead, we are broken. I am begging anyone that reads this to do your research. Learn as much as you can instead of turning to anger and social media. I am getting really tired of seeing so many arguments and hate comments on Twitter, Facebook, and even Instagram. It’s getting ridiculous! Please stop posting status’ like: “President Obama only cares about the Muslims!” or “The people that do not want Refugees to come to America are apparently not Christians and are unGodly. Any Christian would open their doors to anyone in need.” This will not do anything to help, or improve the situation. I’m not saying that you cannot have an opinion, because you can, but the way you use that opinion is what matters. Stop using it to bring people down. Stop bickering. Stop blaming. Do your research. Be smart. We need to build each other up and become unified and strong. If we don’t change our mindset, we will be an easy target for them to knock down.
